When you start researching newborn photography, you’ll quickly come across two very different approaches – lifestyle and studio.
If you’re not sure which one is right for your family, I’m here to walk you through exactly what each one looks like so you can make the decision with confidence.

Lifestyle newborn photography is captured in your own home, in real light, with real life happening around it. That’s the approach I take with every single session. I come to you. No packing up the baby, no loading the car, no trying to navigate somewhere new in those hazy first days of life.
When I arrive at your home, we work with the natural light you already have. There is no need for a perfectly bright space. I know how to find the light in any room.
I bring light-colored swaddles and wraps for your baby and have wardrobe dresses available for moms so you have one less thing to worry about. Then I simply follow your family’s lead.
If the baby needs to nurse, we pause. If your toddler wants to climb onto the bed, we capture that too. The goal is to document the truth of this moment – the warmth of your home, the tenderness between you, the realness of those first days.
These sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending a couple of hours with someone who is genuinely invested in your family. You don’t have to perform for the camera. You just have to be present with your baby.

Studio sessions take place in a photographer’s dedicated space, typically using posed setups with props, backdrops, and controlled lighting. Babies are often photographed in deep sleep, positioned into careful poses – the classic curled-up-in-a-basket kind of images you may have seen.
These sessions require traveling to the studio with your newborn, which can add stress in those early weeks. The environment is controlled and beautiful, but it is someone else’s space, not yours.

The location changes everything about how a family feels during a session, and how they feel directly affects the images.
In a studio, families are guests in someone else’s space. There’s an unspoken pressure to perform – to hold still, to look right, to be camera-ready. That energy shows up in the final images more than most people realize.
In your home, that tension dissolves almost immediately. The energy of the space is already yours, and that changes the quality of what I’m able to capture in a way that no backdrop or prop ever could.

I’ve been photographing Boston-area newborns since 2012, and I made the decision early on to build my entire experience around coming to you. I know how exhausting those first weeks are. The last thing a new mom needs is another thing to organize.
When your session happens in your home, the images feel like yours, not a backdrop that belonged to someone else. And when you look back at those photos years from now, you’ll see your bedroom, your light, your life. That context makes them more meaningful, not less.
My sessions are designed to feel like the celebrity treatment without the hassle. You grab a cup of tea, stay in your pajamas, and let me take care of everything. All you need is the baby. I’ll handle the rest.
Do I need a bright or large home for an in-home newborn session?
Not at all. I know how to work with the natural light in any space. Smaller rooms and softer light are often some of my favorites to shoot in. They create the coziest, most intimate images.
When should I book my newborn session with Isabel?
Book while you’re still pregnant. I’m flexible around your due date. Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled within the first two weeks of life, so having everything confirmed in advance means one less thing on your list after baby arrives.
What does Isabel provide for the session?
I bring light-colored swaddles and wraps for your baby, and I have wardrobe dresses available for moms. You don’t need to buy anything or prepare any props. Just have yourselves ready, and I’ll take care of everything else.
