Hi there! If you have been following along, you know I am a huge fan of in home sessions. There is something so special about capturing your family in the space where your everyday life actually happens. But I also love getting out into this beautiful city with families who want that Boston backdrop, whether it is a leafy park, a stretch of sand, or a charming city block.
One of the questions I get asked the most is “Isabel, where should we take our family photos?” So I put together my personal list of favorite family photo spots around Boston. These are some of the parks, beaches, and city corners I return to again and again because they photograph beautifully in every season and because they give your family plenty of room to relax, play, and just be yourselves while I capture it all.
If you want to see more about how a family session with me works, from styling to the final artwork, I have all the details there. For now, let’s talk locations!

This is hands down one of the most popular locations. The Public Garden gives you those gorgeous swan boats, arched bridges, and manicured gardens, while neighboring Beacon Hill hands you cobblestone streets, gas lamps, and the kind of brick rowhouses that look like they belong on a postcard.
I love pairing the two in a single session. We can start with soft, romantic shots near the lagoon and then wander a few blocks to capture your family against those iconic Beacon Hill doors. It is a favorite for a reason, and it works beautifully for every season, especially in spring when the tulips are in bloom and in fall when the leaves turn golden.

If your family loves the water, the Seaport is calling your name. The Harborwalk gives us open sky, sailboats in the distance, and that modern Boston skyline as your backdrop. It has a fresh, airy feel that photographs beautifully no matter the time of year.
This spot also tends to be a bit more spread out and open, which is wonderful for families with little ones who need room to run before we ask them to sit still for the camera. A little wiggle time always makes for better smiles later.

The Arnold Arboretum is one of my absolute favorites, and it is one of the spots I recommend most often. This is a working landscape managed by Harvard University, and it feels like stepping into your own private countryside without ever leaving the city.
Here is why families love it:
I especially love bringing families here in the fall. The color throughout the Arboretum is simply stunning and gives your photos a warmth that lasts long after the leaves have dropped.

Castle Island is a true local gem. You get harbor views, walking paths, a historic fort, and a little slice of beach, all in one spot. It has that classic Boston flavor that feels approachable and fun rather than overly polished, which is exactly the vibe many of my families are looking for.
Castle Island is also a wonderful choice for families who want a relaxed, playful setting. With the harbor, walking paths, and open space, there are plenty of opportunities to let kids explore and move naturally while I capture the moments in between.

The Esplanade runs along the Charles River and gives you sweeping views of the water, with the Boston skyline or Cambridge as your backdrop. It is one of those spots that feels relaxed even on a busy day, with plenty of little nooks along the path where we can find a quieter moment.
This is a wonderful choice if your family enjoys being active together. We can capture some playful movement, a walk along the path, or a quiet moment sitting on the grass with the river behind you.

Boston Common is the oldest public park in the country, and it still holds so much charm today. Between the Frog Pond, the tree canopies, and the historic Soldiers and Sailors Monument, there is a lot of visual variety packed into one park.
I love this location for families who want that true downtown Boston feeling without leaving the city center. In the winter, if your family enjoys skating, the Frog Pond turns into an ice rink and makes for the sweetest seasonal photos.

Larz Anderson Park is a bit of a hidden gem just outside the city, and it happens to be one of the highest points in Brookline, which means gorgeous views of the Boston skyline in the distance. The rolling hills, the pond, and the mix of open lawns and tree lines give us so many backdrop options within a single visit.
This park tends to be quieter than some of the more well-known Boston spots, which makes it a great choice if your family prefers a more relaxed, less crowded setting for your session.

For families who want that classic New England beach photo, Crane Beach is worth the short drive north of the city. Managed by the Trustees of Reservations, this beach is known for its soft sand dunes and long, sweeping shoreline that gives your photos a wide, dreamy quality you simply cannot get downtown.
A few things to keep in mind if you choose a beach session like this one:
If you want more outfit inspiration before your session, I put together a full styling guide that walks you through color palettes and coordination tips.

Nahant Beach is another favorite for families who love the coast but want something a little closer to the city than Crane Beach. It offers a long stretch of sand along with rocky outcroppings that add texture and interest to your photos. There is a wonderful mix of wide open beach shots and more intimate, tucked away moments among the rocks.
This is a great option for families who want that beach feel but are working with a tighter schedule, since it is easier to reach from most parts of Greater Boston.

Last but certainly not least, the South End offers some of the most charming residential streets in the entire city. Think tree lined blocks, colorful front doors, wrought iron railings, and beautiful brownstone architecture. It has a warm, intimate feeling that works wonderfully for families who want a more urban, editorial style to their portraits.
I love bringing families here in the early morning or evening light when the streets are quiet and the golden light bounces beautifully off the brick facades.

With so many wonderful options around Boston, I know it can feel like a lot to decide on your own. That is where I come in! During our planning conversation, I always ask what your family genuinely loves to do together. Do you love collecting shells at the beach? Do you take weekend walks through the Arboretum? Is there a park near your home that already feels like part of your story? Those little details usually point us toward the perfect location.
If nothing comes to mind right away, do not worry at all. I am always happy to make suggestions based on the season, the light, and the feel you are going for. My goal is always the same, to help you feel relaxed and have fun, because that is when the most genuine, beautiful photos happen.

If any of these spots caught your eye, or if you already have a favorite Boston location in mind, I would love to help bring your vision to life. You can learn more about my family photography session or reach out to get the conversation started.
And if you are also expecting or have a newborn at home, feel free to take a look at my maternity and newborn galleries too. I would love to be part of every chapter of your family’s story.
What is the best Boston location for a family photo session?
It truly depends on your family’s personality and what feels most like you. Beacon Hill and the Public Garden are wonderful for a classic, romantic Boston feel. The Arnold Arboretum is perfect for families who love nature and open space. Castle Island and the Seaport give a relaxed, waterfront vibe. I always help you narrow it down based on your style and the season.
What is the best time of day for outdoor family photos in Boston?
For outdoor sessions, I recommend planning for roughly two hours before sunset. This is often called golden hour, and the light during this window is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering for everyone in the photo.
Do you only shoot at parks and beaches, or can we do our session at home?
I offer both! Many of the families choose an in-home session because it feels comfortable and tells their everyday story. Others prefer a favorite outdoor location around Boston. Either way, I bring everything needed to make the session feel relaxed and fun. You can read more about what to expect from an in-home family session.
How far outside of Boston will you travel for a family session?
I photograph families throughout Boston and the surrounding Massachusetts communities, including spots like Ipswich and Nahant for beach sessions. If you have a specific location in mind that is a bit further out, just reach out and ask. I am always happy to discuss travel for the right location.
What should our family wear for outdoor portraits?
Comfortable, coordinated clothing always photographs best. The goal is complementary tones rather than an exact match. I share detailed color palette suggestions and outfit tips in my styling guide, and I am always available by email if you want a second opinion on outfit choices before your session.
Can we include our dog in an outdoor family session?
Absolutely! Pets are family too, and many outdoor locations can be wonderful settings for including your dog.
