Hi there! I’m Isabel Sweet, a Boston newborn, maternity, and family photographer. I’ve been photographing families since 2012. Over the years I have talked with hundreds of expecting and new parents, and I hear a lot of the same questions come up before a family decides to book their newborn session. That is completely normal! Bringing someone into your home during those first tender days with your baby is a big decision, and I want you to feel fully informed and completely comfortable before we ever meet. So I put together this guide answering the questions Boston moms and dads ask me the most. Think of this as a simple guide to answer the questions I hear most often from new parents.

One of the most common questions I hear is when to book. I always recommend reserving your session during pregnancy so I can plan around your due date. You do not need an exact birth date to reserve your spot. I work around your due date and stay flexible as your delivery approaches. Newborn portraits are typically captured within the first two weeks of life, when babies are still sleepy and curly, making it easier to capture those timeless newborn portraits. Booking during pregnancy simply guarantees your spot on my calendar so we are not scrambling once your little one arrives.

Not at all. I know life with a newborn is unpredictable, and sometimes families reach out after those first two weeks have already passed. It is never too late to capture this stage of your baby’s life. The images may look a little different since your baby may be more alert, but that means more chances to capture real smiles, bright eyes, and glimpses of their emerging personality. These sweet stages pass so quickly, and as I always tell my clients, every stage is worth documenting, and we’ll create beautiful images no matter how old your baby is.

This is one of my favorite questions to answer because it is the heart of how I work. I come to you. Every newborn session takes place in the comfort of your own home or another favorite location in the Boston area so you never have to pack up a newborn and leave the house during those exhausting first weeks. I bring everything needed for a relaxed, professional session, including studio lighting for smaller or dimmer spaces. You truly do not need a big, bright home for beautiful photos. I’ve photographed families in homes of every size throughout Boston and the surrounding communities, so you don’t need a large or perfectly lit home for beautiful portraits.

Honestly, just your baby. That is the whole point of working with me. I take care of everything else so you can relax and enjoy the experience instead of stressing over logistics. Here is what I bring along:
Before your session, I also send every family a simple prep list and a styling guide so you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare. Solid, light-colored tops and dresses in creams, soft grays, and gentle pastels tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family’s expressions.

Newborn sessions typically last between one and two hours, depending on your baby’s needs. I go entirely at your baby’s pace, which means there is plenty of built-in time for feedings, diaper changes, soothing, and simple breaks. There is no rush and no pressure, just a relaxed morning or afternoon centered around your little one’s comfort.
Afterward, we set aside about an hour for your ordering appointment, where I’ll help you choose the artwork and digital images that best fit your family and your home.

Absolutely, and I truly encourage it. These images are a keepsake of your family exactly as it is right now, so I love including siblings, partners, and even the family dog or cat. As a dog mom myself, I know pets are an important part of the family, and they’re always welcome to be included. Many moms tell me beforehand that they would rather stay out of the photos since they are tired or still adjusting after delivery, and that is completely okay. I never pressure anyone, but I will say that by the end of most sessions, even the shyest moms end up wanting a few beautiful images with their baby, and we always make that happen.

I believe in being upfront about pricing so there are no surprises. My newborn session creative fee is $450, which covers your customized, boutique in-home photography experience. Digital images and heirloom art products, like framed wall art and custom albums, are priced separately during your ordering appointment.
Collections start at $1,800 and include the full digital collection along with a tangible family art product. Clients typically invest between $2,500 and $4,500 per full session, depending on the artwork and products they choose.
You can see a complete breakdown of options on my pricing page.

The biggest difference is comfort. A studio session means packing up a brand new baby, driving across town, and trying to keep everyone calm in an unfamiliar space, all while you are running on very little sleep.
With an in-home session, you skip all of that. You get to stay in your pajamas until right before I arrive, your baby naps in their own nursery beforehand, and the whole experience feels like a relaxed morning at home rather than an outing. I bring the studio to you, from lighting to wardrobe to props, so you get that same polished, professional result without ever leaving your house.
Do you photograph outside Boston?
Yes. I photograph families throughout Boston and the surrounding communities, including Newton, Cambridge, Somerville, Lexington, Westwood, and Chestnut Hill.
Do you offer maternity and family sessions too?
Yes, in addition to newborn photography, I offer maternity sessions and family photography, so many of my clients book multiple milestones with me over the years.
What do we get at the end of the session?
You will leave your ordering appointment having chosen your favorite images along with any heirloom products you would like, such as a custom album or framed wall art, so your photos become something you actually display and enjoy rather than files sitting untouched on a hard drive.
I know how many decisions come with welcoming a new baby, and I want the photography part to be the easiest one on your list. If you have more questions or you are ready to reserve your spot, I would love to hear from you. You can reach me directly at isabel@isabelsweet.com or (617) 398-7537, or get in touch to reserve your session.
