This question comes up in almost every inquiry I receive. And I always give the same honest answer: sooner than you think.
The newborn photography window is narrow. Babies change fast. The sleepy, curled, deeply peaceful quality that makes those first portraits so extraordinary lasts a matter of weeks, sometimes less. Timing matters, and so does having a photographer lined up before your due date arrives.

The optimal window for newborn portraiture is the first five to fourteen days after birth. During this time, babies sleep deeply, curl naturally into those beautiful curled positions, and settle more easily during a session.
After two weeks, babies become more alert and wakeful. That’s a wonderful development, but it changes what’s possible photographically. Sessions are still beautiful after this window, but the classic sleepy newborn style is most achievable in those early days.
Planning your session during pregnancy is the only way to guarantee you can photograph during that window.

I open my booking calendar well in advance, and my availability, especially during peak seasons, fills up quickly. Families who reach out in the third trimester sometimes find that the dates they need are already gone.
Booking during your second trimester is ideal. It gives you time to confirm everything comfortably, go through the styling guidance I send, and have a date reserved. Once your baby arrives, you simply let me know, and we confirm the session timing based on how the birth goes.
I hold dates with flexibility built in. Babies arrive on their own schedule. I understand that and plan accordingly.

In Boston, yes, though not always in the ways families expect.
Summer and fall tend to be my busiest seasons for newborn sessions. Families who are expecting during these months should reach out earlier than those with winter or spring due dates. That said, availability can shift at any time of year, and I always recommend inquiring as soon as you’re ready.
Boston winters are also worth mentioning for a specific reason. One of the things families love about in-home newborn photography is that you never have to bundle up a newborn and take them out into a Boston January. I come to you. Your baby stays warm, comfortable, and in familiar surroundings. That’s true no matter what the weather is doing outside.

After you book with me, the planning process begins. I send a questionnaire and styling guidance so you have plenty of time to think through what feels right for your session. For moms, I have complimentary wardrobe dresses available – you tell me your size and preference, and I take care of the rest.
A few days before your session, I’ll check in to go over timing and make sure everything feels settled. You don’t have to manage the details. That’s my job.
The photo-taking itself averages about two hours or less.. I work at your baby’s pace, including feeding breaks, soothing pauses, whatever your newborn needs. Once we’re done, you get to view your images right away! I work with you on how to best display and enjoy your images. I offer several products that are specially designed for your space. This can include framed artwork, an heirloom album, and digital images that you’ll cherish for many years to come.

It happens, and it’s never a problem. If your baby arrives before your due date, just reach out as soon as you’re able. I’ll do my best to accommodate the timing and get your session scheduled within that ideal early window.
The same goes if you’re reading this and your baby has already arrived. Your baby is never “too old” to photograph; reach out right away. If you’re past that window, a session is still absolutely worth having – the images just take on a slightly different quality. Beautiful, real, and worth keeping for exactly the same reasons.
Reach out if you have any questions.
Is it possible to book a newborn photographer last minute after the baby arrives?
It depends on my availability at that time. I always encourage families to book during pregnancy for exactly this reason – last-minute slots may not match your ideal timing. That said, I do occasionally have availability open up, and if you’re within that early newborn window, it’s always worth reaching out. I’ll do everything I can to make it work.
Can I book a combined maternity and newborn package?
Yes, and it’s actually my most popular option for expecting parents. My First Year Collective bundles multiple sessions together – including maternity and newborn – so your family’s entire early chapter is documented in a cohesive, beautiful way. Booking early in pregnancy is especially beneficial for this option, as it gives you the most flexibility in scheduling each session at the right time.
What areas of Boston do you photograph newborn sessions in?
I photograph in-home sessions throughout the Boston area, including the South End, Back Bay, Fenway, Brookline, Cambridge, South Boston, Beacon Hill, Newton, Belmont, Arlington, Lexington, Needham, and beyond. I come to you, wherever home is. If you’re outside these areas but close by, reach out and I’ll let you know if I can accommodate your location.
