I love using digital backdrops… especially those with Santa Claus.  They allow us photographers to create images that spark fun and imagination.  We are also to able to bring to life images that otherwise would have been challenging.  The sky is the limit with the variety of backdrops available for newborn photographers.  For holiday photos, I often surprise families with images of their little ones with Santa.  Follow these steps to using Santa digital backdrops so you can do the same!

Note: knowledge of Photoshop/Elements is needed.

Easy Steps!

Step 1:  Purchase a digital backdrop

I purchased this backdrop at Pixiedrops Digital Backdrops on Etsy (check them out for different overlays.. my favorite are the Santa ones).

Step 2: Pick an original image

I used an image from one of my newborn sessions. The Santa hat is a nice touch but definitely not needed to create a special holiday photo!

Step 3: Use the Quick Selection Tool

While on the original image, click on the Quick Selection tool to select the baby and areas of the photo that you want to transfer to the Santa digital.  Don’t forget little details like fingers and toes.

Step 4: Use the Refine Edge Tool

In selecting the area, you may have to adjust the size of the brush and add/minus sections until you get it just right.  Once the selection has been made, click on the Refine Edge Tool.

Step 5: Refine your selection

At first, the selection may look jagged and rough.  Use the Adjust Edge to refine the edges.  I usually adjust the “smooth” and “feather” sliders until it looks just right.

Step 6: Create a new layer with the selection

With your selection made, go to Layer, New, and Layer via Copy.  This will create a layer containing the selection.

Step 7: Drag the new layer onto the Santa photo

Drag the layer with the selection onto the Santa digital backdrop.

Step 8: The first look

At first, the two images together will look disproportionate.  This is completely normal.

Step 9: Resize the layer with the selection

Use the Free Transform tool to resize and move the baby onto the pillow.  Play around with the image until it looks right.

Step 10: The final image

Viola, the final image!  Prepare to WOW the parents with a beautiful image of baby’s first visit with Santa.
