After scheduling a family photo session, the most frequently asked question is “what do we wear for our family photos?” Below are some tips to help you feel and look fabulous for your family session!
Tip 1: THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP
Moms, pick your outfit first. It will be a lot easier to coordinate the rest of the family around what you are wearing. Also, it makes the experience of dressing the rest of the family fun once you know you have an outfit you feel fantastic in.
Tip 2: Don’t match.. coordinate!
Start by choosing a color palette of 3 or 4 complementary colors and then dress the family in shades of that palette.
Tip 3: Pick outfits within certain color tones (such as pastels, neutrals, jewel tones) for simple coordination.
Tip 4: Start with one pattern and then pull & coordinate the rest of the outfits with colors from that piece.
Tip 5: Stay away from logos, words, or neon colors as they can be distracting and won’t photograph well.
Tip 6: Don’t forget about footwear! Make sure that everyone’s footwear fits properly.
Tip 7: Avoid tennis shoes or sneakers. If you’re more on the casual side, opt for canvas shoes or boat shoes.
Tip 8: When in doubt: opt for neutral tones with a small, fun pop of color.
Tip 9: Think layers as they add dimension and depth to your images. You can get creative – a cardigan, a scarf, hat, etc. Add pieces to draw interest. Remember to keep it simple.
Tip 10: Newborn sessions: I always recommend a neutral palette (displayed below). Light-colored wardrobe in creams, light grays, and light pastels help keep the focus on expressions and the moment.

Tip 11: For a successful session, dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather.
Tip 12: Avoid ill-fitting clothing. Clothes that fit properly will photograph nicely and ensure you and your family are comfortable.
Tip 13: Moms – Say yes to the dress! I recommend dresses from Free People, Zara, Baltic Born, and even Amazon.
Dresses look most stunning because they really flatter every female body. Long, full-length, flowy dresses look amazing on camera.
Tip 14: Not a dress girl? A fitted shirt with a flowy skirt or a blouse with skinny jeans are great options.
Tips 15: Dads – Solid-colored tops, long sleeve tops, or linen button-downs are preferred. When in doubt, a neutral Henley is a great option.
Tip 16: Wear colored denim or chino pants. Avoid shorts or work pants.
Tip 17: Kids – Let your children have input and let them try on the clothes before the session. Make sure the kid’s clothes work well with a lot of movement.
Tip 18: Avoid visible diapers with a long undertop or onesie. For girls, wear a diaper cover or neutral bike shorts under dresses.
Tip 19: Below are the best color palettes for your family photo! Pick 3 complementary colors and show your style with outfits in those shades.
